Yeti: The Curse of the Snow Demon (2008)

Okay, so I liked Yeti: The Curse of the Snow Demon. I might be alone in that, but I liked it all the same, and damn it! I’m not ashamed to admit it.

If you go into a movie with a name like Yeti: The Curse of the Snow Demon looking for a serious, intense watch and then cry that it’s stupid, well, you might want to reconsider what is stupid in this scenario. I couldn’t be more serious about that. This movie screams ridiculous from the title alone. You can rip apart the plot like the Yeti rips apart its victims, but what’s the point? If you spend the entire movie saying, “That wouldn’t happen because…” and “Why wouldn’t they just…” you’re thinking too hard. Stop.

Candyman (1992)

Candyman isn’t your typical slasher film. I consider it to be one of the best slasher movies ever made because it goes far beyond blood and gore and truly frightens and disturbs you.

Candyman, based on the story ‘The Forbidden’ by Clive Barker, plays on the deep-seeded – although seldom admitted – fear that behind every urban legend there is truth. We’ve all heard this story – say Candyman (or Bloody Mary) three times while staring into a mirror in a dark room, and he will attack you. Some of us even know a friend of a friend who tried it and it worked. “They have scars to prove it and everything! OMG!”  We believe somewhere in the back of our minds that it just might work. So of course we do it. Who doesn’t want to be attacked my a killer spirit? Oh right, pretty much everyone.

So why do we do it? Curiousity is stronger most times than common sense. Nothing happens for most of us. Candyman doesn’t appear and we go on with our lives. For Helen Lyle (played beautifully by Virginia Madsen) in Candyman, he does appear and a whole bunch of people get hacked to deal with a hook.

So maybe we shouldn’t poke the bear… just to be safe.
