Dorothy Mills (2008)

Dorothy Mills is what low budget horror is all about. Some complain the movie was a little slow, but in my honest opinion that was necessary to develop the characters.

Dorothy Mills takes its time getting going, but the payoff is a great movie that doesn’t spend all its time on scares and blood. It makes sure you care about who is bleeding and you’re not just scared because something jumps out of the dark and catches you off guard. You’re scared because you care what happens to the people you’ve grown attached to over the course of the movie.

Probably the best thing about Dorothy Mills is it doesn’t cheap out in the end and give you the ending you were expecting. When they try to explain everything that happened in the movie, its well done and doesn’t seem rushed or pulled together. The plot twists are genuinely surprising and the acting is solid – all for less than a million dollars. Not bad at all.

Donkey Punch (2008)

Boobs and boobs then blood and some more blood. What more do you want from a movie called Donkey Punch. The movie is about exactly what you think it’s about. Three girls on vacation meet some boys and an orgy ensues. During said orgy, one of the boys decides to try out the good ‘ole donkey punch, killing the poor girl he’s trying it out on. Much slashing and carnage ensues.

Don’t go into this one expecting stellar performances and a taut, suspenseful thriller. That’s just not what Donkey Punch is all about. It’s a fun, stupid movie to watch and have fun. The performances aren’t terrible, but no one’s gonna take home any little gold statues for it, either.

I’m putting Donkey Punch under “Adults Only” because of the expected amount of full frontal male and female nudity. It’s not really pornographic, but the penis content is high, so if you’re offended by that particular organ, perhaps you should skip this one – and generally avoid movies whose titles refer to kinky sex acts. Just a tip.

Red Mist aka Freakdog (2008)

Some people might be a little confused about the name of this movie, so I decided to put it under what typically appears on the DVD cover which is Red Mist. Apparently the name was changed to Freakdog (what the killer, Kenneth, is called by most of the characters throughout the film) because Red Mist was giving too many people the impression it was a sniper movie. I’m not entirely sure. In any event, whatever you call it, it was a pretty damn good movie.

The plot starts out very familiar – group of pretty young people tease a creepy loner and trick him into thinking they’re friends only to have it go horribly awry for everyone involved – but veers off in a new direction when the somewhat supernatural comes in to play.

Kenneth is comatose after the meanies give him drugs which he reacts badly to. One of the meanies has a heart and feels bad for him. She tries to save his life by giving him an experimental injection. This is where the supernatural element comes into play.

Excellent little film and definitely worth a watch. The open ending really allows you to draw your own conclusions as to what the conclusion really is and doesn’t insult the viewer’s intelligence by trying to wrap everything up.

Zombie X

I can’t get enough of these free zombie games. Way too much fun!

Zombie X is your basic first person shooter, but the graphics are fun and it’s a little challenging. Fire with the mouse and reload with space. Another good time killer.

Zombie Avenger

Zombie Avenger was a necessary addition to this site. It’s a quick fun little game you can play right here on bestslashermovies.com with absolutely no strings attached.

It’s a simple game to play. You aim and fire with your mouse, move with either the ‘w’, ‘a’, ’s’ and ‘d’ keys or the arrow keys. Change your weapon with ‘q’. The weapons are awesome – an AK-47, mini-sub machine and a rocket launcher. My only real complaint with the game is it’s a little too easy, but all in all, a fun game.

Slices (2008)

I have always liked anthology movies, so I was excited to see Slices and I wasn’t let down.

Trent Haaga was the perfect choice as our host, Professor Lucius Phibes. He was likely my favorite part of the movie – funny and entertaining every time he was on the screen.

Even though it’s easy to single out Trent’s performance as my favorite thing about Slices, I really enjoyed the movie as a whole. Some segments were better than others, but that’s really to be expected. Some people seemed to be put off by the film’s obviously low budget, but I thought it made the movie more endearing. Slices is a great example of not needing a big budget to made a great slasher film – let alone five of them.

Night Train (2009)

Leelee Sobieski, Danny Glover and Steve Zahn give performances that are ultimately the best part of Night Train. That’s not to say it’s a bad movie, but it could have been much better.

What Night Train fails to do is really explain what the deal is with the box that causes all the drama on the train. The mystery surrounding said box could’ve made an interesting plot point had there not already been a lot going on with the movie, but ultimately it was completely unnecessary to throw in the mystical aspect. It seems almost like the movie was running short so they threw in a little plot twist. Sad as the movie would’ve been more effective without it.

That said, Night Train is a smart movie. It’s a dark movie about the side of human beings we don’t like to discuss or think about – the money hungry, do anything for a chance to be rich side of human kind – and it doesn’t hold back from really exploring that. Despite its flaws it’s a good thinker and raises some good questions.

Hit and Run (2009)

Its hard to make someone feel for a drunken hit and run driver, but somehow Hit and Run does. I give the credit for that to Laura Breckinridge (Amusement) who gives an excellent performance as Mary Murdock – our drunken hit and runner. Turning in an equally impressive performance as Timothy Emser, the man that goes from being the victim of the hit and run to the sadistic stalker bent on revenge, is the delightfully creepy Kevin Corrigan (Superbad).

Hit and Run’s greatest strength is in its cast and the way it makes you wonder what you would do if you found yourself in Mary Murdock’s position. This is a movie that stays with you which isn’t a bad thing at all.

Amusement (2009)

I really don’t understand why people who don’t like horror movies go to see horror movies. “Oh there are so many plot holes!” “Oh why did she do that?” “In real life she wouldn’t be doing that.”  Here’s a piece of advice for anyone that uttered any of the above statements or asked any of the above questions during Amusement – stop watching slasher movies. Seriously, do all of us a favor and just stop. I don’t wanna hear your whining and you presumably don’t want to waste your time.

I think the people that complain the loudest about Amusement were the ones that were scared most by it. There are some great performances and the movie is generally very scary. Sure there are plot holes but nothing as glaring and obvious as the bad reviews would have you believe. And as for characters doing things you consider stupid, if you took out those things, what would you be left with for a movie?

Amusement has some excellent gore and a decent cast. It isn’t a taut, suspenseful cat and mouse thriller, but it’s an entertaining movie that’s worth a lot more than the naysayers give it credit for,

Yeti: The Curse of the Snow Demon (2008)

Okay, so I liked Yeti: The Curse of the Snow Demon. I might be alone in that, but I liked it all the same, and damn it! I’m not ashamed to admit it.

If you go into a movie with a name like Yeti: The Curse of the Snow Demon looking for a serious, intense watch and then cry that it’s stupid, well, you might want to reconsider what is stupid in this scenario. I couldn’t be more serious about that. This movie screams ridiculous from the title alone. You can rip apart the plot like the Yeti rips apart its victims, but what’s the point? If you spend the entire movie saying, “That wouldn’t happen because…” and “Why wouldn’t they just…” you’re thinking too hard. Stop.
